Black Mountain, N.C. – June 2, 2025 – Waypoint Adventure North Carolina and North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation are proud to continue their partnership to offer adaptive adventure programming for people with disabilities in select state parks. Made possible through the generous financial support of the Friends of State Parks, this collaboration between the three organizations brings accessible kayaking and hiking programs to individuals with disabilities, empowering participants to connect with nature and the parks, while discovering their own potential through adventure.
Building on last year’s success, the 2025 series will feature accessible kayaking at Lake James and Lake Norman State Parks throughout the summer, followed by guided hikes at additional locations in the fall. Registration for kayaking programs are now open to participants and volunteers.
Each program is carefully tailored to meet the needs of every participant, ensuring an inclusive and supportive environment. All necessary equipment is provided, and scholarships are available for those who need financial assistance, making these experiences accessible.
“We’re honored to continue this meaningful partnership and deeply grateful to both the Friends of State Parks and North Carolina State Parks for their steadfast commitment to accessibility,” said Adam Combs, Director of Waypoint Adventure North Carolina. “Waypoint’s programs create powerful moments of growth and connection for individuals with disabilities, their families, and the wider community and we’re excited to keep building that impact together.”
Through this partnership, Waypoint Adventure also provides training for state park staff, equipping them to deliver accessible educational programs and support individuals with a wide range of disabilities. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to fostering inclusion and building community in the outdoors.
"The Division is committed to ensuring that everyone can experience the joy and benefits of our state parks," said Brian Strong, N.C. State Parks Director. "We are very grateful to the Friends of State Parks for their support of this program so we can continue this important partnership with Waypoint Adventure. These adaptive recreation programs create meaningful opportunities for people of all abilities to experience the outdoors."
“At Friends of State Parks, we believe that everyone deserves an opportunity to experience the wonder and beauty of North Carolina’s State Parks,” said Michelle Leonard, Executive Director of Friends of State Parks. “This partnership with Waypoint Adventure is a step towards making our parks more inclusive and welcoming for all. We are proud to support programs that break down barriers and help individuals of all abilities discover the joy of outdoor adventure.”
Waypoint Adventure is a nonprofit organization that began in Massachusetts and expanded to North Carolina in 2023. Each year, the organization leads several hundred adventure programs, engaging more than two thousand participants with over 30 types of disabilities.
