<title>Mt Jefferson Natural Area completes Poetry Contest for 2009 </title>
  <link>http://ncfsp.org/Projects/Mt%20Jefferson%20Poetry/MOJEPoetry.html</link>
  <source url="http://ncfsp.org/newsfeed.xml">NC Friends of State Parks News</source>
<description>From Tom Randolph Lead Interpretive and Education Ranger at Mt Jefferson:
Our 2009/2010 Poetry contest has been a great success.
We received over 300 poems from Ashe Countys K-6th graders. Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer has once again supported the contest as the finalist judge, Kathryn has also written comments about several of the poems for the young poets to read.

Our local school superintendent, school principals, teachers and parents have all been very supportive in this years contest. Last week we distributed the prizes that were funded by NC Friends of State Parks. Each school principal and several teachers attended the presentations. At one of the schools I presented the prizes in front of over 600 students and faculty.

My favorite story that I was told about this years contest came from Ranger Scott Robinson who was the evening duty ranger several weeks ago. He was closing the park at the end of the day and met up with a family who told him that they had brought their daughter to the Mt. Jeffersons overlook so that she could be inspired and write a beautiful poem for our contest.
Who could ask for a better Muse than that.

From FSP: For the fourth year your donations to FSP funded the prizes for our budding nature poets. Learn more on Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byers blog including photos of the winners and copies of the winning poems. Congratulations to them all!

<description>FSP donations and GOPC grant helped five North Carolina State Park staff attend the NAI meeting in Asheville. This meeeing national organization offering such notable speakers, engaging sessions and excellent networking opportunities. With so many different backgrounds and experiences, there are several resources for new ideas to apply, or to get advice from when dealing with issues that someone else has already had to deal with and resolve.. Their attendence would not have been possible with the states current budget concerns.

<title>FSP appoints new President David Pearson </title>
  <link>http://ncfsp.org</link>
  <source url="http://ncfsp.org/newsfeed.xml">NC Friends of State Parks News</source>
<description> In accordance with the bylaws of FSP, the Executive Committee has voted unanimously to appoint David Pearson to fill the vacant position of President of Friends of State Parks.
David has accepted the appointment which is effective immediately and will hold the position until the October General Annual Meeting at which time he will be eligible for election by the full membership for a two year term.
David is currently serving on the FSP board as a Chapter Representative for Friends of Hammocks Beach and Bear Island State Park of which he is President. In 1995 the State of North Carolina recognized David with the North Carolina State Parks Achievement Award for his service to the State Parks System.
We are confident that all Friends of State Parks members will join with David as he works to further FSP's mission of promoting the understanding, enjoyment and protection of North Carolina's State Parks and supporting the NC Parks and Recreation Division.

<title>Park Reservation System live April 22</title>
  <link>http://ncparks.gov/News/special/reservations.php</link>
  <source url="http://ncfsp.org/newsfeed.xml">NC Friends of State Parks News</source>
<description>The North Carolina state parks system will launch its comprehensive reservations system. Reservations for campsites, picnic shelters and other facilities can be made for visits to state parks on July 15 and thereafter.
You can go online at www.ncparks.gov and find links to the online reservations.
Or, call toll-free 1-877-7 CAMPNC. Beginning Wednesday, specialists at the call center will be available to answer questions and help you make reservations from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
Visitors can reserve campsites at most state parks for a single night or more, and campsites and facilities can usually be reserved as quickly as 48 hours beforehand.
Advance reservations wont be required for a campsite or picnic shelter at a state park if the facility is available, and at many parks, some campsites will be set aside for walk-in registration. Without an advance reservation, campsites and picnic shelters are on a first come, first served basis as in the past.
Reservations can be made up to 11 months ahead. There will be a $3 surcharge per nights stay or per reservation to support the system.
At www.ncaprks.gov you will find you find more details, including Frequently Asked Questions and Things You Should Know features that will help you plan your trip to North Carolinas state parks.
